CDC has refined the technique and can now complete the machining cycle for a 2.6 x 2.6 m mould in just over one hour. This is immensely attractive to the Maitreya Project since the required rate of production can now be achieved with fewer machines, i.e. the capital investment is lower.

CDC has developed a specification for dedicated machining systems and is assisting with their procurement. However, given that the manufacturing lead-time alone for such a machine is 9 months, CDC's facilities and expertise are likely to continue to play a pivotal role over the next year.

With the organisation's considerable knowledge of casting technologies, it is also likely that CDC's expertise will be brought to bear on the challenges associated with producing panels of this size at a thickness of just 15 mm!
