Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche

JigmePhuntsokRelicJigme Phuntsok Rinpoche was born in 1933 in eastern Tibet. He is the reincarnation of the terton Lerab Lingpa (SoGyal). A terton is someone who finds terma, hidden Buddhist teachings which are destined for rediscovery at a beneficial time. Rinpoche was also a terton in this present lifetime.

At the age of 14, Rinpoche took vows from Sonam Rinpoche and at the age of 22 he became a fully ordained monk. Under Thupga Yeshe Norbu, Rinpoche received Dzogchen and other Nyingma transmissions. He also studied under Konchok Chopel, a master of the Nyingma and the other Tibetan lineages. For six years, Rinpoche practiced in strict retreat and saw visions of Sakya Pandita and Manjushri.

He ordained thousands of monks and nuns in Tibet and made pilgrimage to the sacred mountain, Wutai Shan, in China, which is said to be the abode of the Buddha Manjushri. He taught numerous Chinese and Mongolian lay people.

In 1993, he was able to visit His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in India and give spiritual transmissions to the Dalai Lama. Rinpoche passed away at the age of 72 years on 6 January 2004, in a military hospital in Chengdu, China.
